The Petersburg, Michigan, community is mourning the death of Lance M. Dusseau, 47, who was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday night on Ida West Road in Monroe County.
The fatal crash involved Lance and his 19-year-old son, Clayton M. Dusseau, who was riding another motorcycle nearby when the incident occurred.
According to the preliminary account of the crash, a loose dog entered the roadway and set off a chain of events that ultimately caused Lance to lose control of his motorcycle.
What Happened to Lance Dusseau?
The two motorcycles were traveling westbound on Ida West Road when a loose dog entered the roadway.
The dog initially struck the side of Clayton Dusseau’s motorcycle.
The animal was then thrown into Lance’s path. Lance’s motorcycle struck the dog, causing him to lose control.
His motorcycle subsequently left the roadway and crashed.
Emergency responders were called to the scene, but Lance suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead.
Clayton, who was riding nearby when the crash happened, was not injured.
Fatal Motorcycle Crash on Ida West Road
The preliminary investigation indicates that the crash was a chain-reaction incident involving the loose animal and the two motorcycles.
There was no indication in the initial account that another motor vehicle was involved.
For Lance, the unexpected appearance of the dog created a hazard that developed within seconds, leaving little opportunity to avoid the collision.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash as they work to establish the complete sequence of events.
Lance Dusseau’s Son Was Riding Nearby
One of the most difficult aspects of the tragedy is that Lance’s son, Clayton, was present at the time.
Clayton was riding a separate motorcycle close to his father when the dog first entered the roadway.
Although the 19-year-old escaped physical injury, the crash resulted in the sudden loss of his father.
For the family, the emotional impact of the incident extends beyond the circumstances of the motorcycle crash itself. Clayton and other relatives are now left to grieve a loss that happened without warning.
A Sudden Loss for the Petersburg Community
Lance’s death has left family members, friends and others in the Petersburg area facing an unexpected loss.
A fatal roadway crash can change a family’s life in moments. In Lance’s case, the circumstances were particularly tragic because the accident occurred during what appears to have been an ordinary motorcycle journey involving his son nearby.
The people closest to Lance will now remember him through the personal moments, relationships and experiences they shared with him rather than only through the circumstances of his final journey.
How the Dog Became Part of the Crash
The preliminary account illustrates how quickly an animal on a roadway can create a dangerous situation.
The dog first came into contact with Clayton’s motorcycle before entering Lance’s path.
When Lance’s motorcycle struck the animal, he lost control and left the roadway.
For motorcyclists, unexpected obstacles can be particularly dangerous because riders have far less protection than occupants of enclosed vehicles. A sudden impact or evasive maneuver can result in a loss of control even when the rider has very little time to react.
The investigation will determine the final circumstances of the crash.
Investigation Into the Crash
Authorities continue to review the incident and the sequence that led to Lance’s death.
The preliminary information identifies the loose dog as a central factor in the crash, but the investigation remains important in establishing the official record.
No additional vehicle has been identified as being involved in the fatal collision.
Further details could be released as investigators complete their work.
