Posted on October 4, 2026

Northbound Interstate 79 was closed in Butler County, Pennsylvania, Tuesday afternoon, September 15, 2026, after a tractor-trailer overturned, creating significant traffic disruptions for motorists.

According to PennDOT’s 511PA system, the crash occurred on northbound I-79 between Exit 78 for PA 228 and Exit 83 for PA 528. All northbound lanes were reported closed while emergency crews responded and the scene was cleared.

Tractor-Trailer Overturns Near Mile Marker 82

Emergency dispatch information placed the response near the 82-mile marker at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The Butler Eagle reported that the overturned vehicle was a flatbed tractor-trailer reportedly carrying drywall. Fire and EMS crews from the surrounding area were dispatched to the scene.

PennDOT advised motorists to use caution and consider alternate routes while the closure remained in effect. Officials did not immediately provide an estimated reopening time.

Traffic Delays on I-79

The closure caused traffic backups along northbound I-79, with congestion also reported on nearby Routes 19 and 228.

Motorists traveling toward the affected section were encouraged to allow additional travel time and avoid the closed portion of the interstate where possible.

Investigation Continues

The circumstances surrounding the rollover remained under investigation as emergency crews worked at the scene.

At the time of the latest reports, authorities had not publicly released confirmed information about fatalities or the full extent of any injuries.

Drivers should continue monitoring PennDOT and 511PA updates for the latest information on lane restrictions and reopening times.
