Cleveland Public Power Outage: What Residents Need to Know

Posted on October 4, 2026

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland Public Power customers experienced significant electricity disruptions during the July 4 holiday period, as extreme heat, unusually high electricity demand and severe thunderstorms placed additional pressure on the city’s electrical system.

According to Cleveland Public Power, the utility normally handles about 300 megawatts of summer demand. During the prolonged heat dome in early July, demand climbed above 320 megawatts, creating sustained stress on portions of the system.

Western Substation Failures Added to the Disruption

One of the most significant problems occurred on Cleveland’s near west side, where portions of the network are supplied through underground cables connected to the Western Substation.

CPP said four underground feeder cables were serving the substation on July 1. After one cable failed during the period of extreme demand, the remaining feeders carried additional electrical load. The other three cables subsequently failed at approximately 1 a.m., 3 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., according to the utility.

Severe thunderstorms later brought strong winds and additional damage, complicating restoration efforts. Local reporting also documented widespread outages across Northeast Ohio during the holiday weekend, with Cleveland Public Power reporting substantial outages within the city.

Why Underground Repairs Can Take Longer

CPP explained that underground electrical faults can require crews to locate and isolate the damaged section before repairs can begin. Unlike overhead equipment, underground cables are accessed through manholes and can be more difficult to inspect and repair.
