Posted on October 4, 2026

A police officer was seriously injured in a shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, during Yom Kippur on September 20, 2026, prompting investigations by the Ontario police watchdog and Belleville Police Service.

Constable Jeff Smith, a 13-year veteran of the Belleville Police Service, sustained multiple gunshot wounds during an exchange of fire with a 29-year-old armed man near the synagogue.

Smith remains in recovery after suffering serious injuries, including significant head trauma that is expected to require further medical treatment.

The armed man, identified as Sean Ward of nearby Quinte West, was also wounded during the exchange and later died in hospital.

What Happened Outside the Belleville Synagogue?

The shooting occurred at approximately 7 p.m. near Victoria and Bleecker avenues, outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue.

A paid-duty Belleville police officer had been stationed near the synagogue while members of the Jewish community gathered for Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar.

According to the preliminary investigation, Ward arrived in a vehicle while armed with a shotgun and opened fire toward the officer.

Smith returned fire before another Belleville officer arrived and also discharged a firearm.

The resulting exchange involved numerous rounds and extended across part of the surrounding area.

Const. Jeff Smith Injured

Const. Jeff Smith was seriously wounded during the shooting.

Police said he was struck multiple times, including suffering serious injuries to his head and body. He was transported to hospital and has remained in stable condition while undergoing treatment.

The Belleville Police Service has described Smith as a respected member of the force and a member of its emergency response unit.

The latest information indicates that his recovery will be lengthy and may involve multiple surgeries related to his injuries.

Suspect Sean Ward Dies

The armed man involved in the exchange was identified as 29-year-old Sean Ward of Quinte West, Ontario.

Ward suffered gunshot wounds during the confrontation and was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

He died from his injuries on September 21.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit subsequently confirmed his death and continued its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the police shooting.

Worshippers Inside the Synagogue Were Not Injured

Approximately two dozen worshippers were inside the synagogue when the shooting occurred.

Despite the intensity of the gunfire outside, no people inside the synagogue were reported injured.

The shooting nevertheless caused significant fear among those attending Yom Kippur services.

The synagogue cancelled its remaining Yom Kippur services following the incident as the investigation continued.

Investigation Into the Shooting

Two separate investigative processes are involved in the case.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the actions of the police officers because an officer discharged a firearm during the incident.

At the same time, Belleville Police are conducting a parallel criminal investigation examining Ward’s actions and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Investigators have examined the scene, collected shell casings and other evidence, reviewed security footage and police recordings, and spoken with witnesses.

Nearby vehicles and homes were also struck by gunfire.

Was the Shooting Hate-Motivated?

The circumstances and possible motive have received particular attention because the shooting occurred outside a synagogue while Jewish worshippers were gathered for Yom Kippur.

The president of the synagogue described the incident as hate-motivated shortly after the shooting.

By September 24, Belleville Police Chief Murray Rodd had characterized the shooting as a targeted, hate-motivated attack against the Jewish community.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack and the suspect’s actions.

Police Increase Presence Around Places of Worship

Following the shooting, police agencies increased patrols and visibility around synagogues and other places of worship in several Ontario communities.

Authorities said there was no known continuing threat to the public connected with the Belleville shooting.

The increased police presence was intended to provide reassurance and additional security following the incident.

Community Responds to Injured Officer

The shooting has generated widespread concern across Belleville and beyond.

Community members have expressed support for Const. Smith and his family as he continues recovering from his injuries.

The incident has also prompted renewed discussion about security around places of worship and the safety of Jewish communities gathering for religious observances.
