Power Outage Puerto Rico Today: Thousands Reported Without Electricity as LUMA Crews Respond

Posted on October 4, 2026

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Residents across Puerto Rico are monitoring electricity service as reported outages affect customers in multiple regions while LUMA Energy continues restoration work and planned maintenance on the island’s electrical network.

The latest outage data cited in the report showed approximately 18,703 customers without electricity, representing about 1.27% of the roughly 1.47 million customers referenced in the report. The reported interruptions include both unplanned outages and scheduled electrical work.

Carolina Among Areas Reporting Outages

The reported outage figures identified the Carolina region as having the largest concentration of affected customers, with more than 13,000 reportedly without service in the cited update. Other areas mentioned include Bayamón, Arecibo, Caguas, Mayagüez and Ponce.

However, the available information does not establish that Puerto Rico is experiencing an islandwide blackout. Outage totals can change as LUMA receives new reports, isolates electrical problems and restores individual circuits.

LUMA’s official system provides customers with information about electricity service and planned improvements. The utility’s scheduled-work page confirms activities on September 24 in Ponce and Toa Alta, including dangerous-vegetation removal. The listed work in Ponce is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the Toa Alta work is listed from 8 a.m. through midnight.

Residents Urged to Check Individual Service

Customers experiencing an outage should check LUMA’s official service information and report problems affecting their homes or businesses. Residents should also avoid approaching downed electrical lines or damaged electrical equipment.

The utility continues to carry out infrastructure improvements. For example, LUMA recently announced a project in Ponce involving replacement of 25 aging poles and vegetation removal along PR-132, intended to improve system reliability for more than 4,900 customers.

Puerto Rico Grid Recovery Continues

The island’s electricity system remains subject to long-term modernization efforts. A June 2026 U.S. Government Accountability Office report found that federal agencies had obligated about $14 billion for Puerto Rico’s grid recovery and modernization since 2017, but only a portion had been disbursed. GAO reported that approximately $2.7 billion of $11.1 billion obligated by FEMA had been disbursed as of its review.

Accuracy note: The exact 18,703-customer outage figure and regional breakdown should be treated as time-specific reported data. LUMA outage conditions can change rapidly, so residents should use the utility’s current outage resources for address-specific information.
